WALKING WITH GULPILIL:
Screen Talk + Short Films
The London Australian Film Festival formally opens its retrospective strand at the Garden Cinema with this double-bill event, combining an illustrated talk and a programme of rarely seen short films.
Join festival programmer Dr Stephen Morgan, as he traces Gulpilil’s legacy through 50 years of Australian cinema, from the reinvigoration of feature filmmaking in the 1970s, to the flourishing of Indigenous work in recent years.
The screen talk will be followed by a hand-picked selection of short films spanning Gulpilil’s career, from very early screen performances to key collaborations with Indigenous filmmakers...

THE TRACKER
Rolf de Heer, 2002
Outstanding in his first proper lead role, Gulpilil plays the Tracker, guiding a party across the outback in 1920s Australia, in search of an Aboriginal man accused of murder. Led by the calculating and complex Fanatic (Gary Sweet), alongside the naive Follower (Damon Gameau) and weary Veteran (Grant Page), loyalties are tested and who is leading who soon becomes unclear.
An exquisite drama, complemented by minimal dialogue, the paintings of Peter Coad and the songs of Archie Roach, de Heer and Gulpilil’s first collaboration is an exquisite drama, and a near-perfect metaphor for the Australian nation...

GOLDSTONE
Ivan Sen, 2016
A small, but deeply resonant part sees Gulpilil play opposite both fellow Yolŋu performer Tom E. Lewis (THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH) and Arrernte/Arabana actor Aaron Pedersen, who has played embattled detective Jay Swan on both big and small screen.
When Swan arrives in town to search for a missing person, he uncovers a web of crime and corruption linking the mayor, mining companies, and local Aboriginal elders...

CHARLIE'S COUNTRY
Rolf de Heer, 2013
As the government increases its stranglehold over traditional ways of life, Charlie (Gulpilil) becomes lost between two cultures. Modern life offers a way to survive but, ultimately, it is one he has no power over. He heads into the wild on his own, to live the old way, but Charlie hasn’t reckoned on where he might end up, nor on how much life has changed since the old ways...

THE CASTLE
Rob Sitch, 1997
The London Australian Film Festival is proud to present this special 25th anniversary screening of a true Australian comedy classic.
When the Kerrigan’s airport-adjacent family home is threatened with compulsory acquisition, sweet-natured patriarch Darryl (Michael Caton) takes his fight all the way to the High Court. An Ealing Comedy transposed to Melbourne’s outer suburbs, this low budget marvel, from the team behind TV’s D-GENERATION and THE LATE SHOW became an instant cult classic, full of quotable quips and mountains of bathos...

Closing Gala:
Renee Webster, 2022
+Q&A with Sally Phillips (actor) and Judi Levine (producer)
The 2022 London Australian Film Festival closes with the UK theatrical premiere of Renée Webster’s hilarious new Australian comedy, HOW TO PLEASE A WOMAN, continuing our tradition of closing the festival with a feature directorial debut.
When her all-male house cleaning business spirals out of control, a mature woman, played by Sally Phillips (BRIDGET JONES’ DIARY, SMACK THE PONY), must acknowledge her own appetite if she is to make a new life for herself. A genuine crowd-pleaser, this film will lead you on a precarious, often hilarious and revealing journey into the vulnerable world of what women really want and how hard it can be to get it right...
