As part of its David Gulpilil retrospective, the London Australian Film Festival presents the YolÅ‹u actor’s crowning achievement, and final collaboration with Dutch-Australian filmmaker, Rolf de Heer.

As the government increases its stranglehold over traditional ways of life, Charlie (Gulpilil) becomes lost between two cultures. Modern life offers a way to survive but, ultimately, it is one he has no power over. He heads into the wild on his own, to live the old way, but Charlie hasn’t reckoned on where he might end up, nor on how much life has changed since the old ways.

Co-written by Gulpilil, and loosely based on his own life in north-west Arnhem Land, this captivating, powerful tale of an aging Aboriginal man at odds with both traditional and Western lifestyles is anchored by a mesmerising central performance that saw him win the Best Actor prize at Cannes.

Presented in association with the Menzies Australia Institute (King’s College London).
