Survival of Kindness
The seventh London Australian Film Festival opens with the UK Premiere of KID SNOW, a rollicking sports drama, starring Billy Howle (On Chesil Beach, The Perfect Couple) and Tom Bateman (Death on the Nile).

The stars, Billy Howle and Tom Bateman, are hoping to join us at the screening.

Set against the backdrop of the sweat-drenched world of 1970s outback tent boxing, Howle plays a washed-up Irish boxer named Kid Snow, who must face up to past rivals, manage present struggles with his kid brother (Bateman), and look to the future with single mother, Sunny (Phoebe Tonkin - Boy Swallows Universe).

Beautifully shot on the West Australian goldfields, and directed by Paul Goldman (Suburban Mayhem, Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story), the film is based on a script by AACTA nominated actor John Brumpton (Romper Stomper, Pawno), and features a stellar supporting cast, including Mark Coles Smith (Mystery Road: Origin), Hunter Page Lochard (Cleverman, Spear) and Tasma Walton (Mystery Road, Sweet As).

Key on-screen talent will be in attendance at this opening gala screening, which will be followed by a live Q&A (TBC).

With thanks to Lizzette Atkins.

WHY WE CHOSE THIS FILM
Laila (LAFF Director):  “This is a really good family drama film to kick off the festival with and we locked it in long before we knew the lead actors would be joining us. Selected for Sydney Film Festival it perfectly captures a life we don’t often see that was commonplace in the outback during the 1970s. The acting is great, the scenery is gorgeous, the boxing is not my thing normally, but I really got into it!”

Stephen (LAFF Co-Programmer):
“A ‘throwback’ in all the right ways, this is classic Aussie storytelling - big characters and big stories in an even bigger country! The itinerant world of tent boxing has been crying out for the big screen treatment, so this is a perfect opening for this year’s festival.”

REVIEWS
The kind of Australian film we used to make”
Sandra Hall (Sydney Morning Herald)

From its richly evocative imagery and finely honed recreation of the long-gone world of outback boxing tents through to its epic, time-honoured brand of familial fracture, Kid Snow is a winning mix of the earthy and the mythic.”
Erin Free (FilmInk)

“...the film has heart. And when it comes to the boxing movie genre, heart goes a long way.”
Tory Crowley (Third Coast Review)
