The London Australian Film Festival’s popular ‘future cult classic’ slot returns with the UK premiere of Zoe Pepper’s pitch-black comedy, BIRTHRIGHT, which takes aim at Australia’s current housing crisis and the widening financial gap between aging parents and their adult children.
Jobless and evicted from their rental home, Cory (Travis Jeffery -
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Unbroken) and his pregnant wife, Jasmine (Maria Angelico -
The Newsreader) are forced to move in with Cory’s wealthy parents.
What begins as an innocent homecoming soon descends into a delightfully twisted family psychodrama, as this wickedly dark comedy skewers the generational and financial divides that will be familiar to Boomers and Millennials alike.
Also screening will be a short film from the Australian Film Television and Radio School.
The 2026 London Australian Film Festival runs from 16-19 July at Finsbury Park Picturehouse. Aussie snacks, sweets & gifts will be on sale in the foyer throughout the festival, with a raffle taking place before every screening.
With thanks to Cody Greenwood (Rush Films) and Zoe Pepper
REVIEWS:
“funny and twisted…Pepper makes an auspicious debut heralding the arrival of an exciting new voice in the world of pitch-black comedy.” -
Chicago Crusader
“Sharp, uncomfortable, and darkly hilarious, Birthright turns a deeply modern housing nightmare into an entertaining and biting portrait of generational frustration. It’s one of those rare films that feels exaggerated and painfully real at the same time.” – The AU Review
