Survival of Kindness
On the final day of the London Australian Film Festival we present the UK premiere of the vital, uplifting documentary, LIKE MY BROTHER, which follows four young Tiwi Island women as they set out to break into the professional leagues of Australian Rules Football.

Shot over six years, this coming-of-age story follows Rina, Freda, Julianna and Jess on their journey from the community of the Tiwi, to Melbourne and a return to their island home, as they dare to dream of becoming stars in the national game, and the newly established AFLW. This is a tale of sport as a force for change and a bridge between worlds as the girls encounter triumphs and disappointments before defining success on their own terms.

This screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with cinematographer and editor, Archie Chew.

With thanks to Sal Balharrie.

WHY WE CHOSE THIS FILM
Laila (LAFF director): “It’s not just important for us to include an Indigenous film each festival, but imperative. This documentary made my heart sing with joy and was a hit at three major film festivals in Australia. Even if you know nothing about Australian Rules football, I highly recommend you coming along as I know you’ll love it!”

Stephen (LAFF co-programmer): "Bringing an array of First Nations stories to London screens is a central part of our mission at LAFS, and this beautifully observed film offers a perfect reminder of the transformative potential of sport, but also the importance of living life on your own terms."

REVIEWS
“Involving, moving and always interesting, it will have you barracking for these young players even if you couldn’t care less about AFL.”
Annette Basile (FilmInk)

“The emotional intimacy that comes across on screen grabs on to the heart and doesn’t let go for 90 minutes.”
Nick L’Barrow (Novastream)
