Presenting the UK premiere of SLANT, an outlandishly camp, pitch-black comic thriller that seems destined to be a future cult classic!
For the second day of the 2023 London Australian Film Festival, we presented the UK premiere of SLANT, an outlandishly camp, pitch-black comic thriller that seems destined to be a future cult classic!

It’s Christmas 1999, and in Melb ourne’s eerily quaint inner suburbs, career-crazed journalist Derek Verity (writer and star Michael Nikou) is tasked with writing his very first exposé on the suspicious disappearance of a local socialite. But when his own family’s dark secrets threaten to destabilise his career, Derek’s ambition drives him to get the scoop at all costs, as personal and professional lives violently collide.

With an ensemble cast that includes Sigrid Thornton (The Man from Snowy River) and Pia Miranda (Looking For Alibrandi), this gloriously deranged take on the murder mystery has more twists than Chubby Checker. Don’t miss it!

Winner: Best Australian Feature, Monster Fest (2022)

“a larger-than-life black comedy thriller with a sizzling build to a wild finale; full of 90s nostalgia, irreverent humour, relatable family drama, and shocking twists you won’t see coming” - Film Freeway

WHY WE CHOSE THE FILM:
Laila (LAFF Director): “Australia is building a really interesting reputation as exciting game changers in film - often taking a genre and turning it on its head. This fab little gem is utterly bonkers, hilarious and gorgeous to look at - I can't wait for us to have a chat about it together in the bar afterwards. And just wait till you see Sigrid Thornton's performance - it's clear she's having an absolute hoot!”

Stephen (LAFF Co-Programmer): “Fans of John Waters will adore this wild, scenery-chewing masterpiece, which had me completely bamboozled from start to finish. The Aussie indie scene really is on fire right now!”
